Blackface is an evolving body of work that explores Black identity, false perception, misrepresentation, and how we learn to see ourselves through inherited distortion.
Behind The Work documents the ideas, questions, sketches, studies, experiments, and reflections that shaped the collection. It offers a glimpse into the work beyond the finished pieces—the thoughts and discoveries that unfolded throughout its making.
I notice I place repeated patterns in my work. Dots, short line strokes. etc. Sometimes I wonder there meaning and why.
Started with a few sketches that embodied the distorted view of black men and women. Some of which I couldn't let go of.

My niece of 5 years said she didn't want to be black. She wanted to be white because they are prettier. She's a beautiful little girl with healthy curly hair.
